USAGE

You use avec to show who or what accompanies someone ("Je suis avec mon ami." - I am with my friend), the tool used ("Il écrit avec un stylo." - He writes with a pen), or how something is done ("Elle parle avec joie." - She speaks with joy).

TRAPS

Do not use avec for "by" when referring to means of transport (e.g., say "en voiture" for "by car," not "avec voiture"). Also, "avec plaisir" means "with pleasure."
