GENERAL INFO

Bienvenue means "welcome." It can be an interjection ("Welcome!"), a feminine adjective ("you are welcome"), or a feminine noun ("the welcome").

USAGE

As an interjection: "Bienvenue !" (when someone arrives). As an adjective: "Vous êtes le bienvenu" (m. sing.), "Vous êtes la bienvenue" (f. sing.). After "merci," it can informally mean "you're welcome."

TRAPS

As an adjective, bienvenue agrees in gender and number: "Il est le bienvenu" (he is welcome), "Elles sont les bienvenues" (they are welcome, f. pl.). As an interjection ("Welcome!"), it remains "Bienvenue!" regardless of the person addressed.
