GENERAL INFO
Ça (from cela) is a invariable demonstrative pronoun meaning "it", “that” or “this”. It refers to an idea, situation, or unspecified thing, often something abstract or already mentioned.
USAGE
Ça is very common in spoken French and can function as:
__Subject or object pronoun:__
"Ça me plaît." (I like that / It pleases me)
"Je comprends ça." (I understand that)
__Impersonal subject in everyday expressions:__
"Ça va ?" (How are you? / Is it going well?)
"Ça sent mauvais ici." (It smells bad here)
"Ça marche." (That works / OK)
__To refer to a situation or idea already mentioned or implied:__
"Ça, c’est difficile." (That is difficult)
__In questions or emphasis:__
"C’est qui, ça ?" (Who is that?)
"Où ça ?" (Where exactly?)
TRAPS
Do not confuse *ça* with *cela*: cela (more formal, mostly written) ; ça (very common in spoken French)
Do not use ça to refer clearly to specific, identified objects; in those cases, use:
celui-ci / celle-ci (this one)
celui-là / celle-là (that one)
