Chef is a masculine noun meaning "chief," "head," "leader," or "boss." It also refers to a professional cook or a conductor (of an orchestra).
USAGE
You'll hear "le chef de service" (department head), "le chef de projet" (project manager), or "le chef d'orchestre" (orchestra conductor). For a professional cook, simply "un chef" is very common.
TRAPS
Don't confuse its broad "leader" meaning with only "cook." The feminine version is "La cheffe".
