USAGE

It is primarily used with "avoir" to form compound tenses, like the passé composé: "J'ai commencé mes devoirs" (I started my homework). It can also function as an adjective: "La tâche commencée" (the started task).

TRAPS

Remember to agree commencé with the direct object when it precedes "avoir": "Les leçons que j'ai commencées sont difficiles." No agreement occurs when the direct object follows the verb: "J'ai commencé les leçons."
