Comment means "how" or "what" (in exclamations). It is primarily an interrogative adverb.

USAGE

It asks about manner or method. Examples: "Comment allez-vous ?" (How are you?), "Comment faire ?" (How to do it?). It can also be an exclamation of surprise: "Comment !" (What! / How!).

TRAPS

Avoid confusing "comment" (how) with "combien" (how much/many). The final 't' is usually silent, but it can link (liaison) with a following vowel sound: "Comment est-ce..."
