es is the second person singular present tense conjugation of the verb "être" (to be). It means "are" when addressing a single person informally.

USAGE

You will almost exclusively find es with the subject pronoun "tu" (you, singular informal). For example: "Tu es grand." (You are tall.) "D'où tu es?" (Where are you from?)

TRAPS

Do not confuse es with "est" (third person singular: il/elle/on est). They sound the same, but es is *only* used with "tu", while "est" is for "il," "elle," or "on."
