GENERAL INFO

Être is a fundamental verb meaning "to be". It's one of the most important verbs in French, used constantly.

USAGE

Use être to describe states, qualities, professions ("Je suis étudiant.") and locations ("Nous sommes ici.").

It also serves as an auxiliary verb for forming compound tenses with many verbs, particularly reflexive verbs and verbs of movement (e.g., *il est parti*).

TRAPS

Be careful! Unlike English, you do not use être for age; you use "avoir" (to have). For example, "J'ai 30 ans" (I am 30 years old), not "Je suis 30 ans."
