GENERAL INFO

Faire means "to do" or "to make." It is a highly irregular verb, one of the most common and versatile in French.

USAGE

It describes actions ("*Je fais mes devoirs*"), creation ("*Elle fait un gâteau*"), and often refers to weather ("*Il fait beau/froid*"). It can also mean "to cause" or "to render" (e.g., "*faire rire*").

TRAPS

Its numerous idiomatic expressions are tricky. Direct translation often fails: "*faire la vaisselle*" (to do the dishes, not "make the dishes"), "*faire attention*" (to pay attention), "*faire du sport*" (to play/do sports). Be aware of its many non-literal uses.
