Notes
GENERAL INFO
importe means "matters" or "is important." It's the third-person singular conjugation of the verb "importer" (to import, to matter).
USAGE
Most commonly, it appears in impersonal constructions: "il importe de" + infinitive (it is important to do something) or "il importe que" + subjunctive (it is important that...). Also frequently used in "peu importe" (it doesn't matter/never mind).
TRAPS
Do not confuse "importe" with the noun "une importation" (an import, the act of importing). While the verb "importer" can mean "to import goods," its impersonal form "il importe" exclusively means "it matters."
