USAGE
It often appears with "de" meaning "far from" (e.g., *loin de la ville* - far from the city). It can also stand alone: *C'est loin ?* (Is it far?). You can use *très loin* (very far).
TRAPS
Don't confuse loin (adverb) with *lointain* (adjective, meaning "distant" or "remote"). *Lointain* describes a noun (e.g., *un pays lointain* - a distant country), while loin modifies verbs or describes distance.
