Non means "no" or "not". It primarily functions as an adverb, used to express negation.

USAGE

It's used to answer a question negatively ("Tu viens ? Non.") or to introduce a negative statement ("Non, je ne suis pas d'accord."). It can also appear before adjectives or adverbs to negate them, like "un vote non-unanime."

TRAPS

Do not confuse non with "ne...pas", which is used to negate verbs directly (e.g., "Je *ne* parle *pas* français."). Non usually stands alone or introduces a sentence, while "ne...pas" frames the verb.
