GENERAL INFO
Reste is a noun meaning rest, remaining, leftover. It's also from the verb Rester meaning "to stay," "to remain," or "to be left."
USAGE
As a noun, reste refers to what is left: "le reste" (the rest/the remainder), "Il mange les restes" (He eats the leftovers), "Le reste du temps" (The rest of the time).
As a verb, it's commonly used to express location ("Je reste à Paris") or a state/condition ("Il est resté silencieux").
In compound tenses (like passé composé), rester always uses *être* as its auxiliary verb: "Nous sommes restés." (We stayed)
TRAPS
Do not confuse rester with the English "to rest" (which is *se reposer* in French). Also, remember it takes *être* for compound tenses, not *avoir*.
