Donner means "to give," "to provide," or "to confer." It is a regular -ER verb.

USAGE

It's used for physical giving ("Je te donne un cadeau" - I give you a gift), but also for abstract concepts ("Donner son avis" - To give one's opinion) or producing a result ("Ça donne faim" - That makes one hungry).

TRAPS

While often "to give," donner can also mean "to produce" or "to result in," which differs from a direct translation. For example, "La terre donne de bons fruits" (The land produces good fruit).
