Eux is a tonic (or disjunctive) pronoun. It means "them" (masculine plural) or "they" when emphasized or standing alone. It refers specifically to male people or mixed-gender groups.

USAGE

It's used:

After prepositions: *pour eux*, *avec eux* (for them, with them).

For emphasis: *Ce sont eux qui ont parlé* (It's them who spoke).

After comparisons: *plus grand qu'eux* (taller than them).

Alone: *Qui est là ? Eux.* (Who's there? Them.)

TRAPS

Do not confuse eux with "ils." "Ils" is a subject pronoun (they *do* something), while eux is a tonic pronoun.

For example: *Ils parlent* (They speak) vs. *C'est pour eux* (It's for them).
