Oui means "yes." It is an adverb.

USAGE

It is used to affirm a positive statement or answer a positive question.

*Example: "Tu aimes le chocolat ? Oui." (Do you like chocolate? Yes.)*

TRAPS

Do NOT use oui to respond "yes" to a *negative* question.

For a negative question (*"Tu ne manges pas ?" - Don't you eat?*), use "si" to mean "yes, I do" (contradicting the negative), or "non" to mean "no, I don't" (confirming it).

Oui is strictly for positive contexts.
