"Police" (f.) primarily means 'the police force' or 'police department'. It also means 'policy' (as in an insurance policy: *une police d'assurance*) and 'font' or 'typeface' (as in text formatting).

USAGE

When referring to law enforcement: "La police est intervenue." (The police intervened.)

For a document: "Il a signé la police." (He signed the policy.)

For text: "Quelle police utilises-tu ?" (Which font are you using?)

TRAPS

"La police" is always feminine, even when referring to the institution. Do not confuse it with individual officers: 'a policeman' is "un policier" and 'a policewoman' is "une policière".
