GENERAL INFO
Tout is a highly versatile French word. It can mean "all," "every," "whole," "completely," or "everything." It functions as an adjective, a pronoun, or an adverb.
USAGE
As an adjective, it agrees (tout/toute/tous/toutes): *tout le monde* (everyone), *tous les jours* (every day).
As a pronoun, it usually means "everything": *tout est prêt* (everything is ready).
As an adverb, it means "completely" and is generally invariable (*il est tout pâle*), but agrees before feminine adjectives starting with a consonant (*elle est toute contente*).
TRAPS
Its agreement is the main trap! Remember:
__Adjective:__ agrees in gender and number.
__Adverb:__ generally invariable, except it becomes *toute/toutes* before feminine adjectives starting with a consonant or aspirated 'h'.
