Passé is: a masculine noun "the past" (*le passé*); an adjective "past" or "last" (*l'année passée*); and the past participle of *passer* (to pass, to spend time).

USAGE

As a noun: *oublier le passé* (forget the past).

As an adjective: *la semaine passée* (last week).

As a participle with *avoir*: *J'ai passé l'examen* (I took the exam). With *être*, it means "went by."

TRAPS

Adjective passé agrees with its noun (*les années passées*).

When *passer* uses *être* in compound tenses, its participle also agrees: *Elles sont passées*.
